Business is booming in Buda, Texas. Whether you own a restaurant, a sporting goods store, or you’re home builder, Buda is a little town that seems to be relatively unscathed by the recent economic downturn. Maybe it is the atmosphere of community, or maybe the beautiful natural surroundings, but whatever it is, it’s working. Interestingly, while Buda seems to be a place for business to thrive, at least one business has transformed the city itself—into the “Outdoor Capital of Texas.”
That seems a strange thing, that Buda, Texas, a small town outside of Austin, would be designated with such a title. It is especially strange, because Texas is a state with so much to do outdoors! However, the nickname is more than just a touristy slogan: it is an official title. The state of Texas designated Buda, Texas, as the “Outdoor Capital of Texas” in 2005.
To understand why, you have to go back a little bit further. In 2003, The Texas Outdoor Zone, an outdoor superstore with the motto “Made for Texans, by Texans,” opened its doors in Buda. The Buda location is the company’s flagship store. Two years later, in 2005, the well-established Cabela’s Outdoor Outfitters opened its second store in Texas—in Buda. The state legislature was so excited that they decided to give the town a new nickname. They stated in the resolution, among other things, that “WHEREAS, To serve the many sportsmen and sportswomen in the region, two renowned outfitters, the Texas Outdoor Zone and Cabela’s, have opened, or are in the process of building, retail outlets in Buda… now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby designate Buda as the official Outdoor Capital of Texas.”
So there you have it! To its credit, Buda, Texas, lives up to its nickname. The city recently established a fifty-two acre Sportsplex park that features a lengthy trail system, a fishing pond, playground and xeriscape.
For the record, Buda is also known as the “Wiener Dog Capital of Texas,” because of the annual Wiener Dog Races each April. Whether its appeal stems from its small-town charm, its economic prosperity, its Outdoor Capital status, or its quirky events like racing dachshunds, it is clear that Buda, Texas, is a good place to live.
